Robin Ruth, M.A., a fine-art portrait photographer serving the San Francisco and San Jose areas, has been a specialist in black and white film images for over 20 years. Even though Robin does offer color digital photo sessions upon request, it has been her desire to retain the authenticity and reliability of black and white darkroom printmaking. "Without the distraction of color one can focus on the subtle qualities of the subject, revealing more of their personality and inner soul."
Robin uses the finest archival paper--which is the highest quality available--used by photographers such as Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham. "There are some instances where digital prints are convenient and necessary, but the true art form still remains in the darkroom using fiber based paper manipulated to perfection." In addition, Robin's photography services include original true sepia toning and hand coloring, which are rapidly becoming lost arts.
One of the reasons Robin is devoted to the simple format of film is her concern that modern photography is dependent on the latest technology: forgetting to migrate images to the latest format will result in losing irreplaceable heirlooms and portrait legacies. The world is also unknowingly losing history because we push the "delete" button far too often on our digital cameras. "Call me crazy, but I have preserved most of my negatives from the past 25 years: such valuable history of people cannot be replaced!"
